Which ERP should you choose for steel construction?
When choosing an ERP for steel construction, check the connection between quotations, bills of materials, steel purchasing, workshop operations and project margins. Ask vendors to demonstrate that workflow using a representative project, then compare the work required to deploy each solution. TopSteel is one of the options you can assess with this method.

ERP, MES and CAD: define the requirement
Start with the information that gets lost between the office, workshop and site. Estimating difficulties, poor visibility over production time and design requirements do not always call for the same tool.
- ERP: manage the project
- It connects areas such as sales, purchasing, stock, invoicing and financial monitoring. Check how a quote revision affects material requirements and the project forecast.
- MES: follow workshop execution
- It supports operations, progress and actual time. Ask how an operator finds a production order and how recorded time feeds back into project monitoring.
- CAD and configurator: define the structure
- CAD supports design and detailing. A configurator prepares parameter-based structures and can feed estimating. Define the required outputs: an estimate alone is not an approved execution package.
A comparison checklist for steel businesses
Classify each requirement as essential, useful or out of scope. For each product, record whether it was demonstrated, needs configuration, needs development or is not covered. A sales presentation does not replace testing your own files.
Scroll the table horizontally to read every column.
| Area | Question to ask | Evidence to request |
|---|---|---|
| Project estimating | How are materials, fabrication, subcontracting and installation separated, and how are variants compared? | A quote using your units, supplier prices and time assumptions, with an explained margin. |
| Steel purchasing and stock | How do you reserve material, purchase the shortfall and handle a partial receipt? | A bill of materials converted into purchasing requirements, including units, quantities, lengths and outstanding receipts. |
| Workshop preparation and tracking | Which documents and priorities can operators see? How do they record time? | A production order, its operations, a time entry and the resulting update to the project. |
| Traceability and documents | How do you find the material batch, certificate and document version used? | A retrieval and export workflow starting from a part or batch. Recording evidence is not certification. |
| Exchanges with existing tools | Which formats and versions are supported, in which direction and with which limits? | An import of your file and a review of marks, units, quantities and information not transferred. |
| Deployment and continuity | Who migrates data, sets permissions and supports the team? What can you retrieve when leaving? | A tested migration plan, support arrangements, available exports and backup/restore conditions. |
Test the software using one project
Prepare a test project without unnecessary confidential information: a quote with a variant, a bill of materials, a partial receipt and a few fabrication operations. Use the same project with every vendor. This is a suggested test scenario, not a customer result.
- Estimate the project using your catalogue and time assumptions. Separate cost from selling price.
- Change a quantity or dimension. Check what is recalculated and what needs human action.
- Reserve some stock and prepare a purchase for the balance. Check units and lengths.
- Release a production order, retrieve its documents and record actual time above the estimate.
- Compare forecast and actual figures, then export project data. Record manual re-entry and limitations.
Compare the full project cost
Ask for quotations with the same scope and time horizon, such as three years. A monthly subscription does not describe the full cost of changing systems.
- Licences or subscriptions: modules, users, sites, storage and options.
- Deployment: data preparation, imports, configuration, connectors and training.
- Operations: support, updates, workshop hardware and internal administration time.
- Changes and exit: more users, adaptations, exports and migration assistance.
Also ask who manages access, how backups are restored and which authentication protects accounts. Get written details of included and additional services. This checklist does not imply a TopSteel price or a universal productivity gain.
How to evaluate TopSteel
TopSteel is a French steel construction ERP/MES published by Oweo SAS. Its ERP offer connects quotations, purchasing, stock, workshop operations, site work and invoicing. A demonstration should confirm the modules your organisation needs and the exchanges with existing tools.
The 3D configurator is a separate offer, usable alone or with the ERP. It supports configuration and estimating for parameter-based structures. Execution detailing and technical approvals must be agreed with your engineering team.
If your main requirement is CAD detailing or an integration whose availability has not been confirmed, start there. Request a demonstration and an agreed scope before selecting a product.
Frequently asked questions
Can a general industrial ERP be suitable?
Yes, if it covers your projects and workflows with acceptable configuration effort and cost. Compare demonstrated differences in steel units, bills of materials, fabrication, site tracking and profitability. The product category alone does not decide the fit.
Do we need to replace our CAD software?
Not necessarily. Define which data should move between design and management, then test your actual formats. Importing a bill of materials does not mean importing every piece of information in a 3D model.
What budget does a steel construction ERP need?
It depends on modules, users, sites, data migration and support. Compare detailed proposals with the same scope and duration. For TopSteel, request a quotation tailored to your company.
Can we start with the TopSteel configurator?
Yes, the configurator and ERP are separate offers. First assess your estimating needs, the structure types to configure and catalogue data, then the exchanges you want with the ERP.
